Introduction
Keith Van Eron's Pro Soccer requires a C-64, C-64C or C-128 with a 1541 or 1571 disk drive and a joystick. These Quickstart Instructions guide you through the loading procedure, provide specific instructions for your computer screen, and help you begin your first pro soccer match.

Controller/Selector
The instruction manual refers to a controller and a selector. On the Commodore 64/128, your joystick is the controller and the joystick fire button is the selector.

Loading
1. Turn off your computer and disk drive.

2. Attach your joystick in port #1 or port #2.

3. Turn on your disk drive. Warning: Do not leave a disk in a C-64's 1541 drive when you turn it on or off-- your disk could be damaged in certain early model drives.

4. Remove all cartridges from your computer.

5. Turn on your computer.

6. Inser the Pro Soccer disk in your disk drive (label side up to load outdoor soccer; label side down to load indoor soccer). If you are playing for the first time, insert the disk label side up.

7. Type: LOAD "*",8,1 and press RETURN. After loading, leave the disk in the drive.

Loading Problems?
If the program does not load or run correctly, turn off both the computer and the disk drive. Leave them off for at least 10 seconds, then try again.

If it still doesen't load or run correctly, turn off your computer, disk drive and all other attached equipment; disconnect all peripheral devices, such as printers, modems, and light pens.

If none of the above solves your problem, try loading the program on another machine. If it loads correctly on that computer, your difficulty is in your hardware. In this case you must have your hardware repaied-- a new disk is not the answer. The most common problem is a disk drive out of alignment. A local dealer or service department can readjust it.

If you have trouble loading on other machines as well as your own, you may be one of the tiny percentage who have a defective disk. In such cases, contact MicroProse Customer Service at (301) 771-1151 Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm EST. Please have pencil and paper handy when you call.

Getting Started
Your First Match
Keith Van Eron's Pro Soccer can be played outdoors, where your opponents are international World Cup teams, or indoors, competing with professional teams from the U.S. Since outdoor soccer is played on a larger field and typically results in lower socring contests, it is the easier selection for new players.

1. Once the game has loaded, the display alternates between the Main Menu and a title screen. At the Main Menu, use your joystick to highlight "Control Panel" and press the Fire button. The Control Panel Menu is displayed. (Detailed descriptions of the menu options are found in the Manual)

Note: All selections are made by highlighting the category with the joystick and pressing fire to toggle between settings. Select the following game parameters:
Selection Mode -- AUTO
Weater -- OFF
Banana Power -- LO
Match Length -- 4 MIN
Replays -- OFF
Color Mode -- Set for your monitor type
In Game Music -- OFF

2. Select "Exit" and press Fire button.

3. Highlight "MicroProse International Challenge"; press Fire.

4. Press Fire again to bypass the challenge table.

5. Highlight "Play Ball" and press Fire. You will be playing as Player 1 against the weakest computer opponent, Oman.

6. Press Fire to begin the match.

Beginning Hints
The match begins with the kickoff from the center circle of the field. The Controls section of the Quickstart instructions provide basic joystick commands for player movement, shooting, passing, tackling and goal keeping. More detailed information is found in the manual. The following hints will help you compete in your first match.

- Look over the Shot Selection diagram in the manual. It outlines the tactical uses of all the shots in your repertoire.

- Your active player, the one controlled by your joystick, blinks. In Auto mode, the player closest to the ball is active.

- Experiment with passing the ball. It is very difficult to succeed if you try to dribble the ball the length of the field.

- When the defense approaches your goal, a beep sounds indicating that the joystick now controls your goalkeeper.

Control Information
Joystick Modes
In Keith Van Eron's Pro Soccer movement, shooting, tackling and goal-keeping commands are entered using the joystick. There are three different control modes based on the following:

- The ball is free; neither team controls.

- Your player is in possession of the ball.

- The opposition is in possesion of the ball.

As you play the game, joystick control is shifted automatically to the appropriate mode of operation. Note: The term "upfield" denotes movement towards the top of your screen.

The Ball Is Free

Diagonally left upfield: Up and left
Move straight upfield: Up
Diagonally right upfield: Up and right
Left: Left
Right: Right
Diagonally left downfield: Down and left
Move straight downfield: Down
Diagonally right downfield: Down and right

When the ball is free, you control player modement in eight different directions (see diagram.) A player gains possesion of the ball upon contact and keeps it until the ball is passed, shot or taken away by an opposing player. If the fire button is pressed when the player makes contact with the ball, it is volleyed a short distance in the direction the player is facing.

Note: If you selected "Auto" from the Control Panel Menu, pressing the fire button while pursuing the ball has no effect. However, if you selected "Manual," pressing the fire button while the ball is free activates the player closest to the ball.

When you control the ball, the joystick and fire button are used to pass or shoot. A kick is iniated by pressing the fire button. The strength of the kick is based on the length of time the fire button is held-- a quick jab for a short kick; hold down for full strength.

Once you press the fire button, joystick control automtically shifts to shot selection mode. To make a shot, press the fire button and immediately move the stick to select the type of kick (see diagram.)

Note: The direction of the shot is relative to the direction the player is facing when the fire button is pressed. For example, if the player is facing southwest, press the fire button and pull the joystick straight down to curl a banana shot from left to right.

Opponent Controls Ball

Goalkeeping (with fire button pressed)
Dive to left side of field: Left
Dive to right side of field: Right
Jump straight up: Down

When the opposition has control of the ball, you must tackle the player to take the ball away. Pressing the fire button sends your active player into a sliding tackle (your player must be moving) in the direction the player faces. Timing is critical in a tackle, and you must actually make contact with the ball while your player is sliding to complete a tackle.

Once your player makes contact with the ball, it is kicked into a free play situation and the next player to touch the ball gains possesion.

When your opponent approaches the goal with the ball, a buzzer sounds, indicating that the joystick now controls the movement of your goalkeeper. If the fire button isn't pressed, movement is the same as that in a free ball situation. If you press the fire button with the joystick in one of the following positions, you can make the goalkepper dive and jump (see diagram.)

Your goalkeeper can take the ball away from an opponent by simply touching the ball-- tackling is unnessecary.

Corner Kicks
You can control the strength of a corner kick, but not its direction. Press the fire button to kick the ball diagonally.

Throw-ins
You control the direction and strength of throw-ins. Move the joystick up or down to select direction-- diagonally left or right, or forward. Adjust strength as you would for a kick.

Goal Kicks
Once the goalkeeper controls the ball, press the fire button to kick the ball straight ahead. Strength is adjusted as for any kick.

Kick-Off
When play starts at the beginning of a game, after a time period or after a goal, press the fire button to tap the ball to your teammate and restart the game.

Special Keys
RUN STOP -- Pauses the game. Press again to restart.
RUN STOP and Q -- Quits the game.
F1 -- Swaps joystick control of teams in a two-player friendly match.
